The Movers and Shakers at Acres
Program Management takes place day and night. Our staff looks for every opportunity to encourage residents of all ages, to speak the Truth, or to pray over current concerns.
One-on-one ‘check ins’ are conducted with each resident on a regular basis. Individual goals are reviewed and challenges discussed. These ‘check ins’ have served as a powerful training time for the residents. They learn how to access community resources, how to plan their next dinner, or how to give feedback directly to a difficult roommate (rather than gossiping about them). All discussion is guided by the precepts set forth in the Bible.
Jackie Gould began volunteering at Acres in August, 2002. Beginning with childcare twice weekly, she later served as night manager for two nights per week. In January, 2003, Jackie became the full-time program manager and assistant to the executive director, Laura Wandoishima.
In March, 2009, Jackie reluctantly accepted the position of executive director from Laura who was dealing with a serious health issue. Like everyone, Jackie was hoping for a miracle, but Laura assured her that she was preparing to make a new life in Arizona with her family and would not be returning to Acres even if she received her miracle healing. Jackie was led then and now by the faithful hand of the Lord as he guides the changes that are taking place at Acres.
- “The leadership hasn’t changed at Acres of Diamonds, it is still God’s ministry, and I am honored to partner with Him in reaching out to women and children by extending His love and hope.”
As executive director, Jackie’s first order of business has been to expand volunteerism. Ephesians 4:12 clearly tells us that God’s design is to equip the body for the work of the ministry for the edifying of the body of Christ. She can attest that people are built up by their encounter with those in need. It has changed her life, and she wants to share that treasured gift with others.
Let this serve as your personal invitation to attend an orientation and explore all the opportunities for involvement at Acres of Diamonds.
Elizabeth Miller began working as a night manager at Acres in 2004 after completing her BA in Biblical Studies. She was young and really had no idea what she was getting herself into, but she instantly loved the residents and her heart won out over her lack of knowledge. While a night manager, Elizabeth completed her Masters in Counseling, and in May of 2009 gave her notice to pursue a counseling career. God, however, had different plans. Just a few months later Elizabeth was back as a substitute night manager because she couldn’t stay away. In February of 2010, Elizabeth was invited to take on the role of program manager.
As program manager Elizabeth overseas the details of each residents’ individual program, night management, and the care and maintenance of the home and apartment building. She also performs duties as assistant to the executive director.
Elizabeth loves people, especially women and kids and totally enjoys working with the residents. Her counseling experience allows her to encourage residents in really practical ways. Her passion for healthy whole families led to a new parenting class, Parenting with Love & Logic. Elizabeth doesn’t know what her future may hold, but she is very thankful to be here for as long as God chooses.
Amy Samudré is our night manager and also a student at Northwest University, working toward her counseling degree.
As night manager, Amy arrives for the evening shift at 5:30 p.m. when she joins the ‘family’ for dinner and sets the tone for the evening. Each resident prepares dinner once a week and Amy ensures that a balanced, nutritious meal is provided.
The night manager is onsite through the night. A head count is confirmed at curfew and she then retires for the night unless she is called upon to manage a crisis on the rare occasion.
Amy’s knowledge of the Word and love of the Lord shows in her every interaction. She is soft spoken, but firm, playful, yet she maintains her authority. Her work ethic is unsurpassed with timely arrivals, follow through, and careful reporting which are not only appreciated, but serve as a great role model for our residents to follow.
Amy is best known for her very powerful prayers. She prays straight scripture. What an amazing example to residents and a reminder to other staff as well.
Elizabeth Christian came to learn about Acres of Diamonds by winning a ticket to our dinner theater on KCMS radio. She immediately expressed an interest in volunteering here. Since that time, she has worked closely with the executive director to develop volunteer orientation and a handbook, as well as a mentoring program. We thank God for sending Elizabeth who has been so willing to jump right in and provide a solid foundation for the volunteer program.
When an opening for night manager recently became available, we extended the offer to Elizabeth. While it was her desire to work with women, she had some reservations. After a trial shift she smiled as she confirmed that she was happy to join the staff. We are blessed and thankful to have such a Godly, generous individual to lead and guide our residents.
Carol Rice joined the staff as a much-needed night manager substitute. She has had many more shifts than we typically require of substitutes and Carol’s calm and quiet disposition are a very welcome addition.
Carol has filled an even greater need — she is a research lawyer and has been able to help numerous residents with legal issues regarding custody issues with their children. This has given our women clarity, hope, and necessary focus for their program. We had asked the Lord how this increasing need for legal assistance might be met, and we are in total awe of His amazingly abundant provision!
